For some, cycling grows beyond a mode of transportation to become a lifestyle– and for good reason. The benefits of cycling are numerous. After a long day at work, a bike ride helps to decompress and explore curiously. Whether for pleasure, sport, or simply getting around, hopping on a bike can transform an average journey into an adventure.
Montreal, with its vibrant energy and unique charm, is a city that unfolds beautifully to the bicyclist. In fact, this city we call home has become particularly welcoming to cyclists. The cycling infrastructure is well-developed and continues to improve. The paths are well-maintained and often separated from car traffic, making cycling safer and more enjoyable. The Route Verte, for example, is a jewel of the Quebec cycling network that passes through Montreal and connects different neighborhoods and points of interest. On the island itself, the Lachine Canal path is a personal favourite of ours. It offers picturesque views and a peaceful setting, perfect for a ride with family or friends.
For visitors or infrequent cyclists, Montreal offers Bixi, a bike renting service. Whether you’re hoping to bike for a few minutes or several hours, Bixi is a convenient alternative to traditional bike rental. Easy to use and accessible everywhere, this service has hundreds of stations scattered across the city, and these bikes are generally well-maintained. Many users are won over by not having to deal with parking in Montreal, which is no small feat!
One of the most interesting cycling experiences in Montreal is undoubtedly the Night Ride. Every year, thousands of cyclists gather for a nighttime ride through the city, lighting up the streets with flashlights and creating a unique festive atmosphere. Participating in this event is a great way to discover Montreal in a different light– literally! The Montreal cycling community is truly welcoming, and events like the Night Ride one reinforce the sense of community and camaraderie. The first Night Ride actually took place in 1985, which shows just how ingrained cycling is in Montreal culture.
Another great destination for a bike ride is Parc de Dieppe. Located on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, this park offers tranquility and breathtaking views of downtown and the Old Port. It's much easier to access by bike than by car, thanks to the bike paths that traverse peaceful green spaces and follow the river. It's the ideal spot for a picnic or just to relax in a unique setting. On fireworks nights, it's the perfect place to watch the show away from the crowd.
Of course, we can’t forget Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This Formula 1 circuit is open to cyclists outside of Grand Prix periods. Riding on this legendary track is a unique experience that easily fills any racing enthusiast with wonder. It's also a great place to train and improve cycling performance.
One of the great advantages of cycling in Montreal is the easy access to points of interest. The belvederes on Mont-Royal, for example, offer spectacular views of the city and its surroundings. Biking there is easy and enjoyable, thanks to well-designed paths. Parc La Fontaine is another popular destination. Its vast green spaces and shaded paths make it an ideal spot.
Of course, biking in the city comes with some risks, and it's essential to stay vigilant. The "ghost bikes," those white-painted bikes installed in memory of cyclists who lost their lives in accidents, are poignant reminders of the need for caution. We encourage you to always wear a helmet and clearly signal your intentions to other road users. Safety is crucial, especially when sharing the road with two-ton machines, often in a bit of a hurry.
Cycling is much more than just a physical activity. It's a way of life, a means to connect with the city and its people, discover hidden spots, and enjoy every moment. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a beginner, we invite you to hop on a bike and set out to discover Montreal!
