How to Have a Spooky and Sustainable Halloween

Halloween is upon us—the season of pumpkins and changing leaves, where the air feels a little more magical, with potions brewing, ghosts looming, and witches taking flight. With the holiday comes an opportunity to celebrate in a more sustainable and mindful way.

Costumes

One of the best parts of Halloween is getting dressed up, and there are plenty of ways to incorporate eco-friendly aspects into your costume choices.

Make your own costume

Many Halloween costumes are produced from synthetic and non-biodegradable materials for one-time wear, and then usually wind up in landfills. By creating your own costume with recyclable materials or clothes you already have, you’re reducing waste and minimizing your environmental impact.

Not only are you doing our planet a favour by creating your own festive ensemble, but you also get to be creative and make something original. Designing your own costume can be both a rewarding and sustainable project!

Costume trading

A nice way to diversify your Halloween outfit can be to swap previous year’s costumes with friends and family members, or lend clothing items that

Shop second-hand

Consider visiting a thrift store for a part of your outfit, an entire costume, or some funky accessories! Thrift stores offer one-of-a-kind items that can give your Halloween outfit an original twist.

Decor

As we enjoy the season’s autumnal activities, we love finding ways to ways to make Halloween festivities both enjoyable and sustainable.

Reusing decorations

Instead of buying new decorations every year, consider storing and reusing items from previous Halloweens. It’s a simple way to reduce waste and bring some continuity to your seasonal décor.

Choosing eco-friendly decorations

As with all holidays, there are now cheap, plastic versions of many traditional decorations. Choosing real pumpkins over plastic ones, making spider webs from rope rather than using store-bought, and utilizing spooky lighting can all make your decor more ecofriendly!

Composting and recycling

Whether carving pumpkins or dealing with candy wrappers, remember to compost organic materials and recycle whenever possible.

BEDI and Halloween

Here are a few ways we’ve integrated BEDI pieces into our halloween festivities in previous years:

Transforming the ORSOLA Jacket into a cloak

By flipping the sleeves inside out and buttoning the top, the ORSOLA can be worn as a cloak to add dramatic flair to your costume, while also keeping you warm! Vampire, witch, superhero - how would you wear your cape?

Using the KITS Totepack for trick-or-treating

The KITS Totepack is ideal for carrying treats while trick-or-treating. Its multifunctional design makes it a great hands-free option for parents, and it can easily switch between a tote and a backpack depending on your needs.

Wishing you a sustainable and enjoyable Halloween!
