When you put on a BEDI bag, you're carrying a piece made from components originally designed for an entirely different purpose.
Each strap is made from salvaged seatbelts, sourced from retired vehicles in local scrapyards, and repurposed into one of the hardest-working parts of a bag. Built to withstand years of use, changing weather conditions, and significant strain, seatbelts are remarkably durable materials– and in our opinion, far too good to end up in a landfill.
The idea that high-quality materials still have potential long past their intended use has shaped our design process from the very beginning. Rather than focusing on what new materials we can bring into the world, we look for existing materials and find ways to continue their lifespan in new, creative, and practical ways.
It's an approach that influences nearly every aspect of our collection, from the seatbelt straps on our bags to the upcycled leather used in our wallets, the recycled metal hardware, and the small details that help each piece stand up to everyday life.

Where It All Began
Founder Inder Bedi often says that BEDI was born in the scrapyards of Quebec.
Years ago, after becoming fascinated with the idea of creating new products from existing materials, he began visiting scrapyards in search of components that still had value and purpose left in them. The seatbelt stood out for its combination of strength, durability, and surprisingly good condition. In particular, many seatbelts in the back seats are barely used, leaving them in perfect condition.
For an entrepreneur with a successful history in bag design, it was obvious how these seatbelts could be reused. Bag straps endure constant handling, friction, weight, and movement, making them one of the most important components of any bag. Seatbelts were already engineered for exactly that kind of performance.
Today, every BEDI bag features a seatbelt strap. We also use salvaged seatbelts in our durable keychains, and as a design feature on our winter coats. It's an element that has become synonymous with our brand, not only because it highlights our origins and dedication to sustainability so well, but because it works!
Giving Leather a Second Life
Our upcycled leather is another material that reflects our sustainable approach to design.
While we offer several styles made from innovative plant-based materials, some of our bags and all of our wallets are crafted using premium upcycled leather sourced from existing products and industries. Over the years, we've worked with leather salvaged from a variety of sources, including luxury automotive interiors, discarded furniture and airplane seats, where the material itself remains beautiful and durable long after its original purpose has ended.
By carefully selecting unscathed pieces and cutting around any imperfections, we're able to transform these materials into beautiful products designed for decades of use.
We’ve always believed that the most sustainable material is the one that already exists. When it comes to leather, upcycling from quality sources makes sense on many levels. Well-made leather develops character over time, stands up to daily wear, and can look even better with age. When material of this quality already exists in abundance, we see no reason to produce virgin materials.
We use no new leather, and we never will. Instead, we focus on giving existing exceptional materials another opportunity to be appreciated and used to their full potential.
Designed to Endure
It doesn’t matter how much time you spend sourcing sustainable materials. If a piece falls apart in two years, it’s not sustainable. So while we source the highest-quality sustainable materials, we also take the time to make pieces that are truly durable.
Every BEDI bag and keychain is finished with military-grade hardware made from recycled metal, selected for its durability, reliability, and timeless appearance. We take the same approach with our zippers, using Canadian-made YKK zippers throughout our bag collection to ensure smooth, reliable performance for years to come.
Many of the design decisions that contribute most to a product's longevity aren't immediately obvious, but they make a significant difference over time. The quality of a zipper, the strength of a strap, and the durability of a piece of hardware may not be the first things people notice, but they're often what determine whether a product lasts for years or needs replacing after a season.
For us, durability isn't an afterthought. It's part of the design process from the very beginning.
Made in Montreal, in Small Batches
All BEDI outerwear, bags and accessories are made here in Montreal in small batches.
Manufacturing locally allows us to maintain close relationships with our tailors, oversee quality closely, and produce thoughtfully rather than excessively. It also gives us the flexibility to work with reclaimed materials, which arrive in limited quantities.
Because we work with existing materials, each production run is slightly different. You may notice subtle variations in the grain of the leather or small details that make one piece distinct from the next. Rather than aiming for absolute uniformity, we embrace these variations as part of the character of working with materials that have already lived a previous life.
The result is a collection of accessories that feels personal, functional, and built to last.
Built for the Long Haul
We design products to be used often and used well.
They're made to accompany daily commutes, weekend trips, grocery runs, flights, coffee meetings, and everything in between. The goal isn't simply to create something that looks good when it's new, but something that continues to perform year after year.
That's why every BEDI bag is backed by a lifetime guarantee.
When durable materials, thoughtful design, and quality craftsmanship come together, longevity becomes more than an aspiration, it becomes part of the product itself.
