Ways to Stay Warm in Winter, Naturally

Whether you're dealing with sub-zero temperatures or chilly, damp days, staying warm during the winter months can be a struggle. Luckily, there are plenty of simple and effective ways to keep warm in winter.

Load up on Layers

When facing cooler temperatures, it’s best to wear multiple layers of clothing. This helps to regulate body temperature and make it easier to stay comfortable during outdoor adventures. Staying dry is also key when it comes to warmth, so be sure that your base layer is sweat-wicking. For your outermost layer, you’ll want a winter coat that is not only warm, but waterproof and windproof. When staying indoors keeping a scarf or zip hoodie close by is always a good accessory for an added layer of warmth before turning up the heat.

Our heavyweight knits made of 100% cotton and our VAZ socks made of merino wool are the perfect layering pieces.

Don’t Get Cold Feet

Chilly feet can affect the warmth of your whole body. If you’re feeling chilly at home, pop on a pair of slippers or a thick pair of socks to help keep your feet toasty. If you’re venturing outdoors, try a pair of wool socks to keep your feet extra warm, and top with warm, waterproof boots.

Use a Humidifier

Between winter winds and interior heating, our homes can become super dry in the colder months. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, helping to carry heat throughout your home and making it feel warmer. In addition to using a humidifier to balance out dry heat, try skipping the bathroom fan to take advantage of the humidity created when showering. Leave the door open to spread warmth and humidity to other parts of the home.

Tip: give wrinkled clothes a simple steam by hanging them in the bathroom during your shower. This is actually the method we recommend for our BEDI coats!

Curl up With a Cozy Drink

Drinking a warm drink such as coffee or tea can help warm you from the inside. For extra warming, try golden milk, also known as haldi doodh (हल्दी दूध). The use of turmeric dates back about 4000 years to the Vedic culture in India, and is considered a warming spice in Ayurveda.

Golden Milk Recipe

2 cups of unsweetened almond milk

1tsp ground turmeric

1tsp freshly grated ginger (tip: keep ginger in the freezer to make it easier to grate!)

1/4 tsp ground ceylon cinnamon

a pinch of freshly ground pepper

1 tbsp maple syrup, or to taste

1/4 tbsp vanilla extract (optional)

To a small saucepan, add your plant milk, ground turmeric, grated ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper.

Stir to combine the ingredients, and gently warm over low-medium heat until it's hot to the touch (usually between 3-5 minutes). Stir frequently, and do not allow the mixture to boil.

Once warmed, remove the saucepan from the heat, and add the maple syrup and vanilla if you choose to use it. Carefully taste. If you'd like more spice, you can add more ginger or turmeric, or you can add more maple syrup for a sweeter taste.

Serve immediately, and top with extra sprinkling of cinnamon if desired. Wrap your hands around the mug and curl up with a candle for ultimate coziness!
